Organic Materials Primer for Biogas

The Biogas Association’s Organic Materials Primer for Biogas is now available to download free of charge. The Primer was developed by the Biogas Association to build expertise and capacity within the organization and its members in the area of organic materials diversion and the integration within agriculture of these materials as feedstocks for anaerobic digestion. It contains the following:

  • a brief historic overview of anaerobic digestion (AD), and an outline of the AD process;
  • challenges faced by the AD sector, and opportunities related to capitalizing on the food waste opportunity and creating jobs. A discussion of the value of different organic materials in energy generation is followed by a summary of the environmental benefits of AD;
  • regulations that govern the AD sector, and testing and certification requirements;
  • pathways that organic material can follow, depending on which type of AD system accepts the material;
  • what is being done differently in other jurisdictions, including Quebec, NS, the US and Europe, where restrictions are in place on how organic material can be treated and disposed.

The Biogas Association is developing an organic materials strategy, and will keep members up to date as the strategy unfolds.
