Biogas/RNG Tours

The 2022 Value of Biogas East Conference provides you with the opportunity to visit two Ontario biogas/RNG facilities.

Enbridge Markham Technology & Operations Centre – North America’s 1st Hydrogen Blending Initiative
Enbridge Gas Inc. and project partner Cummins Inc. announced on January 22nd, 2022, that North America’s first hydrogen blending initiative was fully operational and serving about 3,600 customers in Markham, ON. Hydrogen blending refers to injecting clean hydrogen into the delivered natural gas to reduce its carbon footprint. This $5.2 M pilot blending project involves enhancements to the existing Markham Power-to-Gas facility, which was built through an Enbridge-Cummins joint venture in 2018 to help balance Ontario's electricity supply and demand by storing the province's surplus electricity as pure hydrogen until it's needed. This project will eliminate up to 117 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, moving the City of Markham further toward its objective of net zero emissions by 2050.

ZooShare Biogas Facility – Canada’s 1st Zoo-Biogas Plant
ZooShare completed construction of Canada’s 1st zoo-based biogas plant in Toronto December 2020 and has been generating and exporting power since April 2021. The plant is a 500-kW anaerobic digestion facility with a 20-year Feed-In Tariff (FIT) contract that recycles 2,000 tonnes of manure from the Toronto Zoo and 15,000 tonnes of inedible local food waste to create renewable energy. This process results in an annual reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of 20,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide and allows the return of valuable nutrients to the soil in the form of a high-quality fertilizer. The project was funded by a renewable energy co-operative made up of over 800 members who have invested over $7 million in the biogas project.
