Lulu Island Wastewater Treatment Plant – B.C.’s First RNG Treatment Plant
Lulu Island in Richmond is one B.C.’s most advanced wastewater treatment plants. Having evolved from its primary beginnings in the early 70's through various upgrades, Lulu Island is a secondary system treatment plant with a trickling filter/solids contact process. While biogas has always been generated as a by-product of the wastewater treatment process, for years only some of this gas was used as fuel for indoor heating and plant processes. Now, thanks to a collaborative relationship with FortisBC, Lulu Island upgrades all of its biogas to renewable natural gas using water-based scrubbing technology.
