Biogas 101

Ontario

Ontario provided early incentives for biogas production with the Renewable Energy Standard Offer Program, which was introduced in November 2006 and ran until it was replaced by the Feed-in Tariff (FIT) Program in October 2009. Ontario’s FIT Program was introduced under the Green Energy and Economy Act and it has proven to be the most successful program in Canada for encouraging rapid investment in renewable electricity generation. Ontario currently does not have any programs that support a RNG market in the province. New biogas plants have come online recently with long-term contracts to sell RNG out of the province.

Across Ontario, the majority of member projects so far have been in agricultural biogas, which fit seamlessly into many farming operations.
