FITEC

Fitec is a Canadian-owned business, specializing in transforming organic waste into renewable energy through advanced anaerobic digestion systems. With over 20 years of experience and projects spanning three continents, Fitec has established itself as a trusted partner for agricultural producers, food processors and waste management companies seeking sustainable energy solutions.

Fitec is headquartered in Toronto with a U.S. office in Buffalo. Their team of technical experts offers a full spectrum of services, including the design, engineering, and supply of biogas systems. They provide equipment, such as high-solids pumps, heat exchangers and pasteurization systems, as well as consulting and operational support. Fitec prioritizes efficiency in their technology solutions, and their approach is tailored to meet the unique needs of each client.

What sets Fitec apart is that it is an owner-operated, family-run business, offering a personalized and hands-on approach to operations. Their technology is also distinctive—featuring the Fitec Self-Cleaning Digester, a high-solids Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR) that continuously removes grit and contaminants. Fitec is deeply committed to efficiency and delivering the most optimal, tailored solutions for their clients.

At the core of Fitec's offerings is their proprietary Precision Biogas™ technology. This system is engineered for high total solids feedstocks, minimizing the need for water and reducing operational costs. Key components include low-wear pumps designed to handle thick slurries, robust agitation systems, and a self-cleaning digester with automated digestate removal processes. These innovations contribute to a 100% up-time with no tank cleanouts, and 90% plant efficiency. The system also greatly reduces, and sometimes eliminates, the need for process water.

Fitec's expertise is demonstrated through several significant projects. One example is the ZooShare biogas plant in Toronto, which processes 17,000 tonnes per year of commercial and municipal source-separated organics (SSO). In operation for over five years now, the continuous action of the floor sweeper and skimming system have been collecting approximately 13 tonnes of contaminants on a weekly basis, accounting for 7% of the incoming pre-treated food waste. At Courthouse Hill Farm in Nova Scotia, Fitec’s automated, self-cleaning digester handles 20,000 tonnes annually of industrial, commercial, and institutional (ICI) waste. In Mexico, Fitec delivered a turnkey design-and-build solution for the Villa Avocado project, which processes 85,000 tonnes per year of waste from an avocado processing facility. In addition to these installations, Fitec has a growing pipeline of projects throughout North and South America.

Fitec has been an active player in the Canadian biogas industry and joined the Canadian Biogas Association as members to further their commitment to the biogas community. Tom Ferencivic, CEO of Fitec, was honoured in with the 2024 Canadian Biogas Industry Award for Biogas Champion in recognition of his contribution to growing the biogas sector in Canada.
