Alex Dunlop is the Alternative Fuels Sector Specialist for Marsh in Canada and the US. Alex joined Marsh in late 2019 as the firm was adding dedicated renewable energy insurance specialists to its existing Energy and Power Practice. On the importance of having an alternative fuel focus, Alex notes, “The biogas and the RNG sector can be challenging from an insurance placement perspective, and with the exceptional growth anticipated in the energy transition, there will be many more of these projects coming online and hence the need for more advice in the risk and insurance space.”
Marsh acts as a risk advisor for its renewable energy clients and is involved in all aspects of biogas and RNG projects from conception to commissioning to operation. When project risk management is applied, it helps to ensure the project’s success, reduce losses through the entire life cycle of the project, and improve insurance coverage terms and conditions.
Marsh has worked with several clients on biogas and RNG projects that benefited from its project risk management philosophy. For example, in the early stages of one client’s RNG plant site design, Marsh’s proprietary BLAST explosion modeling software was able to determine the maximum probable loss to the project. This enabled the client to secure a property insurance limit based on evidence, giving the client and insurers comfort it was adequate for the exposures. In another example, Marsh’s team of risk control engineers was able to advise a client on whether a proposed fire suppression system was best suited to the RNG operation.
Alex explains that “novel and unique” are common terms used to describe biogas and RNG production. “We are continually educating the insurance market on the alternative fuel sector to ensure that each project and its risk management procedures are properly understood in order to procure the best insurance coverage available.”
Marsh joined the CBA as a member in spring 2022 to connect with the biogas and RNG community and raise awareness of risk management.
