A global leader in gas compression and industrial refrigeration, Mayekawa is a third-generation, family-owned company founded in Japan in 1924. Established initially as an ice-making business, the company has since grown into a multinational operation with a presence on six continents. Mayekawa has been operating in North America for over 50 years, with Canadian offices in Vancouver (headquarters), Calgary, and Mississauga, and its American headquarters in Katy, Texas.
Mayekawa’s engineering expertise supports a wide range of industries, including food and beverage, oil and gas, and industrial refrigeration. The company’s entry into the biogas and renewable natural gas (RNG) space was a strategic move driven by global and regional insights. “Colleagues from around the world were seeing opportunities in biogas where our equipment naturally fit,” says the Mayekawa team. “We recognized early on that this emerging market was important, and we wanted to show what our equipment is capable of.”

Mayekawa provides customized solutions that meet the needs of a diverse client base. Whether working with third-party packagers or project developers, their teams offer design, engineering, build, and delivery support. They also provide dedicated commissioning technicians, aftermarket service, and parts support across North America to ensure reliability over the long term.
For biogas & RNG applications, Mayekawa specializes in rotary screw gas compression, with the majority of its work focused on compressing low-pressure biogas to the levels needed for upgrading and separation technologies for RNG. They also supply solutions for nitrogen removal compressors, recycle compression, and CO₂ liquefaction. Their compound screw compressor, a two-stage single machine, is particularly well-suited for high compression ratio applications, helping reduce energy consumption by up to 200 horsepower compared to other systems.
Mayekawa is privately owned and is well-known for their efficiency and reliability, backed by precision Japanese engineering. Their equipment can also handle larger gas flow rates, a key differentiator in landfill gas applications where higher volumes are typical.

Mayekawa is currently engaged in multiple Canadian landfill gas projects and has completed over a dozen biogas projects across the U.S. in the past four years, averaging three per year. “The feedback we receive is consistent, that our equipment delivers on reliability and performance,” says the team.
Mayekawa remains optimistic about the future of the biogas industry. While current market viability depends on incentives, the company believes that policy support, innovation, and improved project economics will drive sustained growth. “Decarbonization is critical, and this industry plays a huge role in that,” they note.
Mayekawa became a member of the Canadian Biogas Association as natural step to support their expansion in the biogas & RNG sector. “The CBA’s mission aligns with our corporate responsibility to push toward carbon neutrality,” the company explains. “Membership demonstrates to the industry that we take biogas seriously and any company with the same mindset should consider joining.” Look for Mayekawa at the upcoming Value of Biogas West, where they continue to be active participants in growing Canada’s biogas future.
