NEL-i is a Montreal based firm dedicated to climate action, energy transition, and the preservation of natural capital. For over two decades, the company has leveraged a diverse array of regulatory and market mechanisms to monetize greenhouse gas reductions and removals. By integrating engineering and strategic advisory, market solutions, and project development, NEL-i proactively identifies emerging opportunities and builds lasting partnerships that amplify their impact.
What sets NEL-i apart is its unique blend of engineering rigor, deep regulatory insight, and a comprehensive understanding of commodity and environmental markets. While many firms specialize in only one of these areas, NEL-i integrates the full spectrum to deliver optimal outcomes for their clients.
Today, NEL-i collaborates with Canadian, U.S., and international clean fuel producers and distributors to advance projects across a range of pathways including RNG, hydrogen, ethanol, bio based diesel, and CNG or propane fueling stations. Beyond project execution, they also serve as trusted advisors to regulators, corporations, and some of North America’s largest specialized consultancies.

In the biogas and RNG sector, NEL-i is best known for its turnkey Clean Fuel Regulations (CFR) Compliance and Monetization service. This collaborative model aligns NEL-i’s interests directly with project developers to maximize total value creation.
That value begins early in the process by incorporating Carbon Intensity (CI) implications into a project’s economic model before finalizing feedstock choices and capital equipment selection. From there, NEL-i manages every phase including CI modeling, monitoring, reporting, verifier liaison, compliance, and monetization of the credits, allowing project developers to stay focused on what they do best.
Expanding on this comprehensive compliance framework, NEL-i also developed a turnkey CFR solution specifically for electric vehicle (EV) charging activities, delivered through its sister company, CFR Platform. This end-to-end service enables charge point operators and fleet managers to easily navigate regulation complexities, generate credits, and capture the full economic benefit of EV charging infrastructures.
NEL-i is currently driving several high impact initiatives across Canada. In Ontario, they are assisting an RNG producer with facility expansion and feedstock selection optimization. In Quebec, they are supporting an RNG producer seeking regulatory approval for new categories of avoided emissions. They are also advising the Quebec Energy Board regarding a regulatory opinion requested by the Minister of Economy and Innovation. At a national level, they are also helping a major Canadian energy company develop novel pathways for hydrogen production.
Looking ahead, NEL-i remains highly optimistic about the broader clean fuels sector and foresees massive growth for RNG across North America. To accelerate this momentum, the firm is currently tackling one of the sector’s greatest hurdles, which is project financing.
Historically, there has been no robust financial mechanism to fund project development using future CFR credit revenues. To bridge this gap, NEL-i is building a dedicated CFR financing solution scheduled for deployment in 2027. This tool is designed to de-risk investment in clean fuel production, helping get more projects built faster.
NEL-i joined the Canadian Biogas Association (CBA) to deepen its commitment to the biogas and RNG community. Viewing this sector as a vital growth engine for Canada’s energy future, the company actively seeks to catalyze industry expansion alongside producers, developers, and fellow member organizations. Through the CBA, NEL-i stays closely connected to emerging market developments while sharing its deep expertise in carbon markets, clean fuels, and project execution.
