Northern Biogas is a renewable natural gas (RNG) producer and services provider specializing in the development, design, construction, ownership and operation of RNG facilities. Headquartered in Morgantown, West Virginia, the company has grown from a regional anaerobic digester builder and maintenance provider into an integrated RNG developer and operator, drawing on decades of experience in dairy and landfill biogas operations and traditional natural gas processing.
The company’s roots date back to 2004, when its founders began building and servicing dairy digesters. Incorporated in 2009, Northern Biogas later narrowed its focus to developing and operating wholly owned RNG assets, combining its original expertise in anaerobic digestion with the engineering, operational discipline and leadership of the conventional oil and gas sector.
Today, Northern Biogas operates eight dairy RNG facilities, with a ninth expected to come online in December, and has four landfill projects; two coming into operation in the next two months, another in construction forecasted to come online in 2028 and one in early development. Its projects span several U.S. states, including Wisconsin, Michigan, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Indiana and Oklahoma. Northern Biogas also participates in the Canadian RNG market through Canada’s federal Clean Fuel Regulations. The company has multiple projects generating CFR credits and was among one of the earlier RNG producers to participate in the CFR market after the last election. Other projects currently supply California, with opportunities to serve Canada under development.

Northern Biogas provides RNG to the market while managing the full lifecycle of its facilities, from engineering and construction to ongoing operations and maintenance. The company designs its own digesters and delivers its own engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services, helping control costs while maintaining quality and reliability.
The company focuses on long-term partnerships with farmers and landfill operators. Northern Biogas aims to keep facilities running reliably while minimizing disruption to site operations. “We value the importance of our long-term relationships built on trust and communication. We want to be as seamless as possible and not interrupt operations,” says Mark McConnell, Vice President of Business Development at Northern Biogas.

A key differentiator is the company’s technical expertise grounded in experience with conventional natural gas processing. This, along with utilizing their employee’s deep history in dairy and landfill biogas operations helps the team bring a high level of engineering and operational knowledge to these projects. Its approach emphasizes investing upfront in durable facilities designed for dependable long-term performance.
Looking ahead, Northern Biogas sees strong potential for continued sector growth as demand expands across Canadian and U.S. markets, with emerging opportunities in marine fuels, Europe, and Asia adding further diversification.
As its Canadian market presence grows, joining the Canadian Biogas Association (CBA) was a natural next step. The company values the association’s advocacy, industry knowledge, regulatory updates and networking opportunities. “We’ve found great value in supporting the CBA and getting the word out through advocacy, as well as the knowledge and alerts they provide. The conferences have also been great places to meet other players in the industry,” says McConnell.
