The Canadian Biogas Association (CBA) hosted its third annual spring Hill Day on June 2 and 3 in Ottawa, ON. The action-packed two days included 11 meetings with more than 20 government stakeholders and a Meet & Greet evening reception at the Château Laurier, with nearly 100 attendees, including MPs and Senators interested in learning more about biogas.
CBA staff and Board members met with key areas of government at both the political and departmental levels. This included Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Natural Resources Canada, Environment and Climate Change Canada, the Treasury Board Secretariat, the Privy Council Office, and the Prime Minister’s Office.
In these first conversations with the newly elected government, we emphasized just how well biogas and RNG support Canada’s most urgent priorities, including growing Canada as energy superpower and quickly mobilizing investments in cross-country unity. We reinforced that while Canada is currently tapping only 14% of its biogas and RNG potential, competitive and targeted funding mechanisms for biogas and RNG would rapidly unlock near-term investments in clean energy across Canadian regions and sectors. Our discussions also explored regulatory improvements to facilitate development and interconnection across Canada.
Our key messages included the critical need for investment tax credits for biogas and the positive impact they would have in rapidly spurring sector development. We continued to emphasize the need for streamlined funding for biogas projects—such as through the Agricultural Clean Technology Fund and Clean Fuels Fund—that recognize the added benefits of biogas systems. We also maintained that the Clean Fuel Regulations could be better leveraged to send a strong signal to the industry in support of additional biogas and RNG projects.
The tone across our two days of meetings over the two days was highly encouraging, and there was a clear recognition of the benefits the biogas industry brings to Canada. One board member noted, “We used to have these meetings and start from square one. Now we can go in and have deeper conversations, since we’ve grown [government’s] knowledge of the industry over the years.”
The Canadian Biogas Association will continue to build on the connections made during the Hill Day. Members are encouraged to contact the CBA with any questions. It is an honour to support our members in our shared goal of growing the biogas sector to its fullest potential in Canada.
