Raising awareness is an integral part of the work the Canadian Biogas Association (CBA) is doing to broaden the understanding and adoption of biogas & RNG. Over the last few months, we’ve launched two campaigns to increase this awareness among different audiences.

In February, we hosted a webinar series aimed at municipalities looking to learn more about biogas & RNG. Over three sessions, attendees heard presentations from and asked questions of experts about technology, procurement, and policy.

The first webinar of the series was hosted in partnership with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. This webinar covered the basics of biogas & RNG for communities beginning their waste to energy journey. Speakers from cities across Canada and technology firms introduced ways to create new revenue streams, generate renewable energy, and support local sustainability goals through waste management.

The last webinar of the series provided more detail on carbon markets and compliance with Clean Fuels Regulation (CFR). Industry experts described different ways biogas producers could generate CFR credits. There was also discussion of book and claim and environmental attributes in various markets.

This webinar series also highlighted the CBA’s self-assessment tool for farmers and teased the launch of a new self-assessment tool for municipalities. The tool for farmers is hosted at FarmingBiogas.ca, and helps farmers assess the market in their area, infrastructure, feedstock and location acceptability.

To date this online tool has helped 180 users understand more about the requirements for developing biogas facilities on their farms. The site also hosts several videos showcasing farms across Canada that have already implemented anaerobic digesters into their operations. These videos – and several podcast episodes – feature six farmers and their stories.

Another portion of the awareness campaign was farm tours in British Columbia and Ontario. Nearly 200 people attended the tours, with the second in partnership with the Innovative Farmers Association of Ontario. More than 90% of the attendees were farmers, showcasing how important hands-on outreach is to this sector of the industry.

As a CBA member, you can learn more about biogas & RNG facilities in provinces around the country in our 2023 Canadian Biogas & RNG Market Report.
