The Canadian Biogas Association is pleased to publish the 2026 Canadian Biogas & RNG Market Report, providing a timely snapshot of an industry poised for growth as Canada seeks domestic, low-carbon energy solutions that enhance energy security, reduce methane emissions, and create value from organic waste.

Biogas & RNG are uniquely positioned at the intersection of Canada’s waste management, methane reduction, energy security, and decarbonization objectives by transforming organic waste into a reliable source of renewable energy.

The report highlights a sector well-positioned to contribute to Canada’s goals. With 26 RNG projects currently under development, Canada’s RNG production is expected to quadruple by 2028.

Yet despite this momentum, only a fraction of the country’s biogas potential is being utilized. With supportive policy frameworks and investment conditions, biogas & RNG can play an increasingly important role in advancing Canada’s energy transition, reducing methane emissions, strengthening energy resilience, and supporting a more circular economy.

Since our 2023 Market Report, the industry has continued to expand, generating approximately 32 PJ of low-carbon energy from nearly 300 facilities across Canada. These facilities convert organic waste streams from farms, municipalities, wastewater treatment plants, industrial operations, and landfills into valuable renewable energy and digestate to return nutrients to the soil.

As governments, businesses, and communities seek practical solutions to reduce emissions while strengthening domestic energy systems, biogas & RNG are able to deliver multiple benefits: capturing methane emissions, diverting organic waste from disposal, producing renewable energy, supporting clean transportation, and creating economic opportunities in both rural and urban communities.
