The 2025 Value of Biogas East Conference was held in the picturesque waterfront district of Toronto from March 17-19. The event attracted over 400 attendees and featured more than 50 exhibitor booths. Over the course of three days, participants engaged in valuable networking opportunities, attended informative educational sessions, and took part in thought-provoking discussions.
“The conference was invaluable not only for potential consulting or project-related questions but also just to get a broader feel for the industry.”
Day 1 started with a lively atmosphere, thanks to the sold-out tour drawing over 50 attendees. Tour participants learned about Walker Environmental East & South Landfills long history of biogas utilization spanning more than 20 years. The landfills are now home to Ontario’s largest RNG plant, designed for 950,000 GJ of RNG annually. Additionally, the site sells landfill gas to their neighbour, General Motors, through a dedicated pipeline, who uses it as a fuel in their cogeneration plant. The day ended with the charged Canadian Biogas Association Members Only Happy Hour, which included some St. Patrick’s themed activities and green cocktails and mocktails to cap it off!
“Wow, I never realized how large this event was, or how big the Canadian biogas industry was.”
Day 2 kicked off with a keynote address by RBC’s Shaz Merwat, followed by an entire day of content and knowledge sharing in the plenary sessions. The day showcased Canadian Case Studies, with spotlights on Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada, plus International Perspectives. Attendees enjoyed learning more about the industry and growth within their own backyards. Remarks were heard from our two presenting sponsors, and exhibitors during the showcases. Sessions were held on Carbon Markets and Carbon Intensity, and on exploring innovative applications of biogas. The conference finished with the Canadian Biogas Industry Awards, where the Project of the Year winner was announced and awarded. Finally, attendees were invited to stay and network at the evening Reception, held in the exhibitor expo space.
“I wish I attended one of these conferences earlier in our journey. It would’ve been a game-changer to have this kind of exposure sooner.”
Day 3 featured pressing topics with everything from Canadian Water Utilities Producing and Utilizing Biogas Effectively, to Sustainable Growth for the RNG Industry, and Strategies for Effective Landfill Gas RNG Projects. Additionally, we heard presentations on Grit: What it is and What to do About it, and Biogas & RNG End-User Perspectives. The conference finished with Exhibitor Trivia, an interactive game where participants had the chance to learn more about all the wonderful conference exhibitors and win prizes.
