8:30 – 9:15 am: Opportunities and Challenges for Canadian Water Utilities in Producing and Utilizing Biogas Effectively
The Canadian Water Network (CWN) has launched the "Charting the Course to Net Zero Water in Canada" project, bringing together municipalities, cleantech networks, utilities, and academia to develop a net-zero roadmap for the Canadian water sector. The capture and utilization of biogas is a strategy that wastewater utilities can leverage to reduce energy usage and generate revenue. This session will feature CWN and project partners discussing the opportunities and challenges for water utilities in utilizing biogas to meet their net-zero water goals.

As the biogas & RNG industry in Canada is experiencing growth as demand for clean energy increases, the sector could learn from established safety standards and incident-sharing frameworks found in industries like oil and gas. Grit poses a costly challenge to anaerobic digesters, with cleanouts costing up to $2M. Unlike wastewater systems, digesters process grit with higher variability, organic content, and complex surface chemistry. This workshop addresses the necessity of understanding grit composition and explores pre-treatment methods to mitigate its impact. Attendees will gain practical tools to identify, analyze, and manage grit in diverse feedstock streams.
