the logo is the words Eco EngineersEcoEngineers (Eco) is a consulting, auditing, and advisory firm with an exclusive focus on the energy transition. Eco helps clients stay informed, measure emissions, make investment decisions, maintain compliance, and manage data through the lens of carbon accounting.

Eco’s team of engineers, scientists, auditors, consultants, and researchers live and work at the intersection of low-carbon fuel policy, innovative technologies, and the carbon marketplace. Established in 2009, Eco is headquartered in Des Moines, Iowa, with hubs in California, Houston, Europe, and Canada.

Eco offers a well-defined suite of services for its clients, including life-cycle analysis (LCA), asset development, regulatory engagement, compliance management, and training through its educational platform, EcoUniversity, along with auditing and verification.

Eco has kept pace with the growth of the biogas and renewable natural gas (RNG) sector, assisting many organizations to understand and navigate RNG projects from concept to commissioning and operations, resulting in more than US$4 billion invested in successful clean energy initiatives. Eco assists biogas and RNG projects in navigating regulatory complexities, carbon measurements, and reporting and validations.

Sally Taylor, a smilling white woman with dark brown hair wearing a matching sweaterWith a highly qualified and well-respected LCA modeling team, Eco has provided carbon intensity (CI) scores for hundreds of RNG projects at all stages of development – from landfills and dairy to swine manure projects. Sally Taylor, Director of Strategic Development for RNG at Eco, shared some insight on the company’s focus on biogas and RNG. “We are seeing some interesting dynamics with U.S. clients bringing biogas into Canada, and vice versa. Depending on the CI of the biogas, selling it to different markets can be more economical. We play an important role in helping our clients verify their CI and review options to find the most economic offtake.”

Eco stands out from other consulting firms by bringing deep expertise to help clients navigate the clean energy continuum by curating expert teams to meet the specific needs of clients. Taylor adds, “Eco is unique in its focus on clean fuels and the broad scope of expertise in European, Canadian, and U.S. markets and we are one of few certified verifiers in Canada.”

Regarding trends in the biogas sector, Taylor is thrilled to see the interest in opportunities under the Clean Fuels Regulation (CFR) in Canada. “Many RNG producers are seeing Canada as the best opportunity, and it’s a testament to the attractive program design of the CFR.” Taylor also noted that Canadian utilities are far outpacing U.S. utilities in terms of integrating RNG, and they are being looked at as an example of a path to follow.

Eco joined the Canadian Biogas Association (CBA) as a member because it is aligned with the CBA’s goal of building a strong, robust biogas and RNG industry in Canada and supports the important role the CBA plays in educating stakeholders to enhance the awareness of the biogas industry.
