Novilla RNG

Founded in 2021 and headquartered near Ann Arbor MI, Novilla RNG is a North American developer focused exclusively on dairy manure–based renewable natural gas (RNG) projects. The company was established by a leadership team who bring more than a decade of experience in landfill gas and dairy RNG development. After entering the dairy RNG sector in 2018 and helping operate eight projects, the founders launched Novilla with the mission of becoming the industry’s low-cost, high-trust provider by eliminating inefficiencies and working directly with farmers throughout the full life cycle of every project.

Novilla RNG partners with dairy farmers to design, build, own, and operate RNG facilities on their farms. In exchange, farmers receive a royalty based on project revenues, creating a long-term, aligned relationship. Unlike the traditional model where multiple parties are involved along the development timeline, Novilla is fully vertically integrated. Its 12-person engineering and construction team handles in-house design, equipment procurement, construction, and commissioning, while all operations are managed internally. Digesters are sourced from a German manufacturer, membrane upgrading skids from suppliers in Japan and the United States, and manure handling equipment from Denmark and Canada, alongside select proprietary designs developed by Novilla’s team.

This vertically integrated approach significantly reduces capital and operating costs, by as much as 30 to 40 percent compared to more fragmented development models. By building projects correctly from the outset and maintaining operational control, the company achieved a 98.2 percent plant on-stream rate at the end of 2025, and lower operating costs than typical plants. Every farmer partner serves as a reference, an achievement Novilla attributes to its direct, transparent relationships and consistent delivery on commitments. The company emphasizes that dairy-based RNG, particularly low carbon intensity projects, can provide carbon-neutral or even carbon-negative gas at one of the most cost-effective pathways available for decarbonizing natural gas usage.

Among its growing portfolio, Novilla’s newest project, Bellevue, in Brookshire, Vermont is located just three kilometres south of the Quebec border and began production on November 20. Since commissioning, the Bellevue project has achieved a 99.3 percent on-stream rate, with only 15 hours of downtime in its first three months. The performance reflects the company’s disciplined design and commissioning practices. Today, Novilla has five operational projects and four more under construction.

Looking ahead, Novilla is enthusiastic about opportunities in Canada. The company is in the process of registering projects with Environment and Climate Change Canada to enable gas sales into Canadian and international markets. With strong agricultural resources and LNG export capabilities in both the United States and Canada, Novilla sees significant potential in supplying to overseas markets through book-and-claim mechanisms.

Novilla joined the Canadian Biogas Association to deepen its engagement in the Canadian market, build relationships, and support the growth of the dairy RNG sector. As demand for low-carbon gas rises across North America, Novilla aims to work with Canadian partners to expand local supply, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and support rural economic development.
