Cambridge Bay, Nunavut Generating Biogas from Food Waste

Researchers from NRC’s Clean Energy Innovation Research Centre have been working in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, a project that will produce electricity for the community’s generators and reduce the amount of food waste sent to landfills. In March, team members Fabrice Tanguay-Rioux and Frédérique Matteau Lebrun made a 2-week visit to install a 20-litre bioreactor in the general analytical lab at the Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS). Micro-organisms were placed in the cylindrical anaerobic digester, under controlled conditions, to create an environment that converts food waste into biogas. The digester will operate for 4 months on waste collected from local residents and restaurants, and the data collected will be used to determine the feasibility of a larger system.
