Hartland Landfill begins production at Vancouver Island’s first RNG facility

The Capital Regional District, in partnership with FortisBC Energy Inc. and Waga Energy Canada, has commenced production of renewable natural gas (RNG) at a new facility located at the Hartland Landfill. This marks Vancouver Island’s first RNG facility. First announced in 2020, the nearly $32 million Hartland RNG facility employs Waga Energy’s WAGABOX® technology and is designed to produce up to 360,000 gigajoules of RNG annually.

A new report issued by the IEA presents a first-of-its-kind global geographical analysis of the untapped potential of biogas and biomethane from agriculture, municipal waste and forestry residues. Using detailed geospatial and production cost data, it assesses the potential, costs and suitability of over 30 types of feedstocks in more than 5 million locations worldwide. The report also analyses the current state of play of the biogas and biomethane sector, reviewing today’s policies, business models, consumption patterns and supply trends.

Alberta Bill 44: Agricultural Operation Practices Amendment Act, 2025

Alberta’s government has introduced legislation to enhance clarity surrounding organic waste in the agricultural industry, with the aim of inviting the budding biogas industry into the province. Bill 44, updates the Agricultural Operation Practices Act, which provides rules and standards for all agricultural operations that handle manure and organic materials. The Act provides clarity on how organic material can be managed, which will provide certainty for agricultural operations regarding storing and using digestate generated from manure and provide investor confidence. The Bill passed Third Reading and received Royal Assent on May 15th. It will come into force on Proclamation once signed as an Order in Council, which will be published in the Alberta Gazette Part 1 every month on the 15th and 30th/31st.
