Let Green Gas Count: 145+ global organisations sign open letter calling for clarity in GHG Protocol on the role of market instruments for renewable gases

As CBA members, we encourage you to considering co-signing the letter to ensure the rules support faster, more effective decarbonisation and help realise the full potential of green gas in the global climate effort. Following the withdrawal of guidance on the use of biomethane certificates in the GHG Protocol, over 145 companies and trade associations from around the world have issued a public joint letter to the governance bodies of the GHG Protocol calling for the key role of market-based instruments to be recognised in the Protocol’s Scope 1 inventory. Their message to the GHG Protocol is simple: Let Green Gas Count. The signatories, including the CBA, represent economic operators globally responsible for the production, trading and consumption of renewable gaseous fuels and their derivatives. They underline the urgent need for a climate reporting framework that provides rules and certainty for investment in their sectors.

Article: Potential contribution of biogas to net zero energy systems – A comparative study of Canada and Germany

This study assesses the potential contribution of biogas made from biogenic residues and waste to net-zero energy systems. Our comparative analysis includes a biomass potential assessment, a review of current biogas production practices, and an examination of CO2 flows along the biogas value chain. We present a consolidated and harmonized dataset for Germany and Canada, identifying a significant potential to contribute to CO2 emission reductions, with an estimated 30 million tons per year in each country. The contrast between the two countries is informative. In Germany, the provision of biogas and biomethane is already widely established, whereas Canadian biogas usage is still at an early stage in certain provinces. Canada, however, has a stronger focus on CO2 separation, and more coherent options for carbon capture and storage. To unlock their full potential, each of the two countries’ distinct strategies could draw on the other country’s complementary experience in deriving an optimal solution.
