Project Of The Year – Niagara Rng Lp – Walker East & South Landfill Gas To Rng

Niagara RNG LP is a partnership between Walker Environmental, Comcor Environmental and Enbridge, formed to develop the largest RNG facility in Ontario. The Walker Environmental East & South Landfills have a long history of biogas utilization spanning more than 20 years. The landfills are now home to Ontario’s largest RNG plant, designed for 950,000 GJ of RNG annually. Additionally, the site sells landfill gas to their neighbour, General Motors, through a dedicated pipeline, who uses it as a fuel in their cogeneration plant. There are also 2 x 1MW landfill gas powered generators at the site, one generating electricity for the grid, the other, used behind the meter. The RNG project rounds out the full portfolio of LFG utilization projects and makes this renewable energy campus a nexus between waste management and the energy transition.

Biogas Champion – Stefan Michalski

With over 25 years of international experience in renewable energy, Stefan Michalski has been a cornerstone in the development of Alberta’s biogas sector. As a consultant with ECB Enviro North America Inc., he led the development of Lethbridge Biogas, the province’s largest privately operated commercial biogas and cogeneration facility, which has been in operation since 2013 and processes over 100,000 tonnes of organic waste annually. He led critical policy discussions with the Government of Alberta and continued to champion innovation as Director of Lethbridge Biogas, including overseeing Alberta’s first commercial RNG upgrading project. Stefan’s contributions have laid the foundation for future growth and earned him a lasting place as a true champion of biogas in Canada.
