The 2025 Value of Biogas West Conference took place in Calgary from October 6–8, bringing together 350 delegates and 35 exhibitors for three dynamic days of networking, knowledge-sharing, and insightful discussion.
Day 1 set the tone with two immersive site tours that brought biogas innovation to life. The GrowTEC Tour, a full-day experience at the Perry Family farm near Lethbridge offered a deep dive into sustainable agriculture and bioenergy in action. Delegates toured a working model of integrated renewable energy, complete with fresh Perry Farm potato chips and lunch sponsored by ATCO. At the Bonnybrook Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) Tour, back in Calgary, attendees explored one of the city’s largest infrastructure investments, over CDN $1 billion in upgrades to the Bonnybrook WWTP. Touring inside a building surrounded by four digesters was a standout moment. The day wrapped with a new milestone, 150+ guests attended the Canadian Biogas Association Members Only Happy Hour, our biggest turnout yet!
Day 2 delivered a powerhouse lineup of plenary sessions, bringing together industry leaders to explore the future of biogas and RNG across North America. The day opened with a dynamic panel discussion on Alberta’s growing biogas potential, setting the tone for a full schedule of rich content and collaboration. Conversations continued with in-depth panels on navigating future RNG demand, exploring some of North America’s newest and most innovative projects, sharing lessons learned from operational plants, and discussing the path forward in scaling RNG within regulated gas utilities. Attendees also heard insightful remarks from the two presenting sponsors and exhibitors, adding valuable context to the industry’s current landscape and emerging opportunities. The day concluded on a celebratory note with the announcement of the Canadian Biogas Industry Awards Biogas Champion. This year’s recipient, Stephan Michalski, was recognized for his outstanding contributions to advancing biogas in Canada. The energy carried over into the evening as delegates gathered for a vibrant networking reception, closing out the day with new connections, continued conversations, and excitement for what’s ahead.
The final day opened with a keynote address from Minister RJ Sigurdson, Alberta’s Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation. His remarks reinforced the province’s commitment to supporting renewable energy and sustainable innovation in agriculture, setting the stage for another day of impactful discussion. Throughout the day, delegates engaged in forward-thinking panel sessions that tackled some of the most pressing and promising topics in the industry. From Canada’s Clean Fuels Regulation and the role of policy in powering biogas and RNG growth, to the emerging opportunities in Bio-CO2 markets, the conversations were both timely and solution-oriented. The program also explored how artificial intelligence is beginning to transform the biogas sector and highlighted next-generation technologies designed to optimize performance and increase revenue.
This year’s conference wasn’t just a success, it was a statement. Biogas continues to gain momentum, and it’s clear that this community is leading the charge!
