The announcement of the 2026 Project of the Year Award winner and Biogas Champion winner was made on March 31 as part of the Value of Biogas East Conference. Canadian Biogas Association is excited to honour the winners as true leaders in the industry.

The Waga Energy landfill gas to renewable natural gas (RNG) project at Hébertville-Station transforms previously unrecovered landfill biogas in Québec’s Lac-Saint-Jean region into a valuable source of clean energy. Using Waga Energy’s WAGABOX® technology—combining membrane filtration and cryogenic distillation—the project will produce approximately 55 GWh of high-purity RNG annually, enough to supply nearly 2,900 households, while avoiding an estimated 9,400 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions. Supported by $15 million from Québec’s Ministry of Economy, Innovation and Energy, the project contributes to provincial RNG targets and circular economy goals. As Waga Energy’s fourth project in Québec and fifth in Canada, it demonstrates a scalable, partnership-driven model that builds local expertise, attracts investment, and advances the transition to a resilient RNG economy, with first injection anticipated in early 2027.

Over the past 20 years, Chris Duke has been a driving force in the development of Canada’s biogas sector, combining technical expertise with a strong commitment to collaboration and mentorship. He played a key role in launching the industry through the Ontario Biogas Systems Financial Assistance Program in 2006, supporting the development of approximately 25 early anaerobic digestion facilities, and contributing to foundational policies such as Ontario’s Feed-in Tariff program and regulations enabling off-farm feedstocks. Known for his hands-on support, troubleshooting expertise, and willingness to share knowledge, Chris has been an invaluable resource to project developers and operators across the country. His continued work on environmental performance, including digestate management and greenhouse gas reductions, and his lasting influence on industry growth make him a true Biogas Champion.
